A decorated and famous officer is leaving the Alpharetta Police Department, and it is a dog. Alpharetta K9 Officer Mattis finally retired from the job he has had for several years.

In 2016 during one of these arrests, Mattis was injured after falling 30 feet over a retention wall while chasing a suspect. Mattis hurt his liver in the fall but still managed to do his job and track down the suspects. After Mattis was rushed to the veterinary hospital and was given emergency surgery for his lacerated liver. Mattis made a full recovery and was given an award by the police department for his bravery.

Americ’s Top Dog

Mattis and his owner Tappan have appeared on the television series “America’s Top Dog”. They have also made quite a few appearances for charities and events all over and have raised more than 200,000 dollars for local charities.

The duo has also appeared on shows such as “Entertainment Tonight” and “Good Morning America.” With all of this attention, Mattis has built a social media presence. With over 200,000 followers on Instagram and a few viral Tik Tok videos that have earned him over 3 million followers, Mattis is something of a celebrity.

“He has been an incredible ambassador,” Tappan said. “It’s the way that he has brought people together is that stands out and makes it special.”

Hopefully now in his retirement, Mattis can find all the love, treats, and attention he could ever want. Mattis can now have a celebrity retirement at the ripe age of seven.
