Texas Dalmatian Dog Mum Gives Birth in Texas to 16 Puppies

By Lovingdogs

One Texas dog owner had the most amazing surprise when Luna, her Dalmatian gave 16 puppies in one week!

A veterinarian at Fredericksburg Veterinary Facility said that Luna was born on Thursday night at about midnight. The pup gave birth naturally to her first five littermates, but labor ended at 7 a.m. that morning.

So her owner called to schedule an appointment at the veterinary clinic. Turner suggested she bring Luna in as large dog breeds don‘t typically have many complications during labor.

Luna was immediately taken to the hospital shortly after her arrival in order to be assisted by vets in delivering the sixth pup. Doctors found that there was still a surprising number of canines being born.

I kept telling the owner, “There surely can’t”! I kept repeating to the owner, “There surely cannot be anymore!” Turner stated to Newsweek. “I replied, “I know there are at least two more.” Then I would respond, “Oh, there’s certainly one more.” Two more. “

She continued, “We kept miscounting them.”

A Facebook posting from the veterinary facility shared the fact that “all hands were on deck” during the birth. Everyone, from the owners to the front desk, helped with the delivery. Luna gave birth to 16 beautiful puppies. Eleven of these were delivered by Cesarean section.

Fredericksburg Veterinary Center uploaded photos of the mother and her infants to its Social page. The center also praised its staff for their efforts.

The clinic said that they were happy to report that all 16 puppies, as well as mom, are doing well after surgery. “It wasn’t 101 Dalmatians. But it was enough for us all to have our hands full today!”

“Luna had already been a great mother and was eager to spend time with the puppies. Turner confirmed that she is doing very well and that the puppies do great,” Turner said to Newsweek. “… It was a moment of chaos, but it was worth it in the end.

Breeding Business reports that the average Dalmatian litter size is seven puppies. Luna’s average is more than twice this.

Luna was just three puppies away from breaking the world record in the largest Dalmatian litter. Melody, an Australian Dalmatian from Australia, gave birth to 19 puppies
